“In January 2020, the Board of Directors of the AVA: America’s Walking Club, declared the first seven days of April to be “National Walking Week” which would include the traditional “National Walking Day” sponsored by the American Heart Association from 2007 to 2019.”
At Fox Run Senior Living in Fairborn, OH, we strive to make sure that our residents stay active and healthy to ensure they enjoy their golden years in the best ways possible! Each of our residents has unique interests when it comes to fitness – some enjoy walking outdoors at local parks while others get their workout in at our cardio drumming classes. With that in mind, we adapt our fitness programs according to the tastes of our residents, utilizing both in-house fitness classes and our vendor partnerships to provide a variety of choices for our residents to stay active. Due to our unique resident group, the classes we provide may vary from those of our sister communities so that we are all meeting the needs of our individual residents.
As the Resident Services Director, I motivate my residents to stay active by showing excitement about the activities, which gets them excited about it too. I know many of them would enjoy what we are doing if they would just give it a try. Many of the activities, especially the walking activities, can be a social event as much as an exercise event.
There are a lot of unique fitness events offered in our community. We just started cardio drumming and the residents love it. It’s offered every Thursday, and they really look forward to it. We use the back of chairs for the drums and pool noodles for the drumsticks; the residents go crazy with it. We also have different types of chair exercises that we do seven days a week.
When we think of celebrating National Walking Week, we don’t just see a way to stay active. We see an opportunity to interact with those in our communities and meet new friends along the way. In celebration of this week, walkers are encouraged to find the motivation to get active.
We are going to start our walking club in celebration of National Walking Week. We used to go for walks in the Spring, Summer, and Fall around the community, but we had to stop once it got cold outside. Now that the weather is getting warmer, we are anxious to start our Walking Club again. The residents enjoy being outside, even if it’s just walking around the community.
We are also incorporating an indoor Walking Club for when the weather doesn’t cooperate. It may not be as invigorating as going outside, but it still provides an opportunity to both move and socialize. With a good conversation, it’s easy to forget you’re even exercising!
