Mental Health Awareness Month was originally celebrated in 1949. That was 73 years ago! The goals of the sponsoring organization, originally the National Committee for Mental Hygiene (now Mental Health America), were to improve attitudes toward mental health/illness, improve services for mental health clients, and promote mental health.
Older adults are more at risk for depression because they may be feeling thoughts of loneliness and isolation. They could also be going through a period of adjustment as they transition from their home to a community. They have spent most of their life taking care of themselves and others, only to find themselves in situations where they are the ones now needing care. That is difficult for many to accept.
Signs of mental health distress in seniors may be physical, such as a changing in eating with weight loss, and sleep disorders. In addition, there can be behavioral changes and increased confusion. Isolation and not doing things they normally would enjoy are signs of mental health distress as well.
It is important to attend to mental health as well as physical health because they each affect the other. Impaired mental health can cause many physical problems and vice versa. When assessing an individual, both their mental and physical condition must be taken into consideration and treatment for both is vital for older adults to remain healthy.
