My name is Alycia Gloff, and I’m the memory care director at Fox Run Senior Living.
In honor of Women’s History Month, I want to take a moment to celebrate Jan, one of our neighborhood residents!
Jan Brown spent most of her life in the Fairborn, Ohio area; however, she also loves to reminisce about the three years she lived abroad. Those years were spent in Italy with her husband, Barry. It was beautiful there, the food was amazing, and they didn’t want to leave. While in Italy, Jan worked for Army Intelligence. Upon returning to the States, she transitioned to work in human resources and continued to travel. Florida, where her brother lived, and Seattle, where her sister resided, were two of her favorite locations.
Now retired, Jan enjoys the quieter life. She loves slow dancing and listening to the “oldies” and classic hits of the 1970s; The Beatles and Queen are her favorites. The Godfather is her favorite movie. She loves animals, especially cats and dogs, and she values kindness, respect, and friendliness.
I feel it is important to honor the stories and history of individuals with dementia because too often, residents are only known for who they are now and not for what they have done throughout their lives. Knowing their history and being able to engage in conversations to spark memories is wonderful.
In the Fox Run Neighborhood, we connect individuals living with dementia to their personal history by spending one-on-one time with each resident as often as possible. We speak on topics they are interested in, based on what we’ve observed they enjoy. Even when they are having a down day, this often elevates their moods.

Every year Arrow’s personal and professional development coach, Michael Buckley, asks everyone to pick a “Word of the Year.” The goal is to look inward and consider what we each need more of and what might improve our lives.
