Gardening is potentially a “long-term” memory for our residents with dementia. My family were and are farmers in Indiana. My grandfather always took pride in his garden and instilled those values on all of us grandchildren to ensure we understood the purpose of hard work. As he ages, now 93, he is not able to speak on most things that have happened in recent years, but he remembers every day he spent with his grandchildren in the garden and working on the farm. He enjoys telling his stories to his new friends that he has met in his senior community.
It is beneficial to connect individuals living with dementia to their long-term memories. Helping residents remember things they were good at and enjoyed doing is something they can be proud of. These memories provide for gratitude and satisfaction and are topics they can speak about when they aren’t having the best of days.
Here at Fox Run Senior Living Fairborn, OH, to celebrate and participate in National Gardening Month, we’ll be working with the Resident Services Director to ask residents what vegetables and flowers they would like to plant and grow this year, then purchase those seeds. We have several raised garden beds and an indoor planting area where we will be planting the selected flora, helping them grow over the next few months. We have also purchased pots that will be painted and decorated by the residents and used to plant indoor flowers.
